Taipei, Taiwan, December 15, 2017 – Advantech Co Ltd (TWSE: 2395), a leading global supplier of industrial and embedded systems, at the forefront of the Industry 4.0 revolution, and real-world deployment of devices and software for the Internet of Things (IoT), today unveiled its VEGA Video Acceleration Solutions to meet the future demand of high resolution video processing in 5G mobile networks. Network operators and service providers can leverage VEGA for high performance compression, bandwidth reduction, ultra-low latency, energy and space savings when building the new mobile infrastructure to serve the many 5G use cases that require advanced HD and UHD video streaming.

According to the 2017 Cisco Visual Networking Index, mobile video will generate more than three-quarters of all mobile data traffic by 2021, compared to 60% in 2016. Many 5G use cases are tightly linked to video with the most obvious ones being Augmented Reality (AR), Virtual Reality (VR) and Ultra-High Definition (UHD) 4K and 8K live streaming. These new revenue-generating applications make use of the increased bandwidth, lower latency and improved agility of the 5G network, and will require extensive high-resolution video processing at different points in the network infrastructure. Network operators will need to optimize their infrastructure from core to mobile edge in order to integrate efficient video capabilities into their 5G sliced networks that can be offered as value added features to video-based application providers.

Advantech’s evolving VEGA portfolio comprises a range of efficient and high performance video acceleration platforms that can be integrated into the new mobile infrastructure and offer the required video computing power to optimize video-centric 5G use cases at the lowest possible power. Operators and service providers will be able to leverage VEGA platforms that already have an established presence in the professional video industry to underpin many 5G mobile applications including but not limited to:

  • Augmented Reality: Context-aware video feeds compressed and streamed to user devices
  • Live VR/360 Broadcasting: Contribution uplink encoding to create the high resolution viewable landscape, and per-user viewport encoding at mobile edge to stream to individual devices.
  • UHD 4K/8K Streaming: High density, cloud-based transcoding of live services for distribution across 5G network
  • Edge Video Orchestration: Just in time transcoding and caching at mobile edge to adapt to changing user and network circumstances
  • Security and IoT Monitoring: decoding and analyzing surveillance images and video from high definition 4K static and wearable cameras as close as possible to network edge
  • Transportation and Autonomous Driving: monitoring, recording and analyzing video transmitted from vehicles

The VEGA portfolio offers commercial-off-the-shelf access to powerful hardware video acceleration technology that can perform real-time, professional-grade 4Kp60 HEVC 10-bit encoding in less than 7W, improving on space and power requirements for equivalent software-only solutions by an order of magnitude. Current VEGA products easily adapt to different deployment requirements by offering different form factors from small modules to PCI Express cards in combination with high performance servers. At the top of the range, the VEGA 7000 Series of High Density Servers are pre-integrated systems that can be deployed from core to edge. For cloud streaming services, a 1U VEGA 7000 series OTT transcoding server in a data center can deliver up to 32 UHD/4K or 128 FullHD channels per rack unit – the highest density and lowest power per channel available in the market. For the edge, a VEGA-7010 edge video processing server provides low-latency, multi-channel UHD HEVC video encoding, decoding or transcoding in a 1U, short depth footprint.

“The initial benefits from 5G will accrue to operators facing capacity challenges in populated areas where traffic density is at its highest, but where further increases in individuals’ video traffic will put even greater strain on the backhaul network.” said David Lin, Vice President, Advantech Video Solutions Division. “Advantech VEGA solutions are ideal to boost compression performance in the new mobile video infrastructure with cost-effective, low power, easy to integrate video processing platforms that can make a more efficient use of bandwidth in both the mobile edge and core. We believe that video acceleration will be an essential component in making VR, AR and self-driving cars a reality in the 5G era.”

The high density benefits of VEGA platforms come with a comprehensive software package that streamlines product development and reduces integration risks and costs. The VEGA SDK provides Linux or Windows APIs and supports open standard coding, virtualization and cloud schemes including FFmpeg, KVM and OpenStack for being integrated into next generation software defined infrastructure.
